Shopping Across the Men’s and Women’s Cuts
Same knit, two patterns. The difference shows in length and width more than anywhere else.
Our knitwear and denim come in a men's cut and a women's cut, and plenty of people shop the section that is not labeled for them. A woman looking for a properly roomy sweater often finds it in the men's cut, and the reverse happens with denim too. Doing it well comes down to knowing what actually changes between the two patterns.
How the Two Cuts Differ in Knitwear
A men's sweater is usually longer in the body, longer in the sleeve, and wider across the shoulders and chest. A women's sweater is shorter in the body and narrower through the shoulders, often with a little shaping toward the waist. Much of the oversized look from the decade came from exactly this swap: a women's frame in a men's knit, sleeves pushed up, hem sitting low on the hip.
How the Two Cuts Differ in Denim
Women's jeans are cut with a bigger difference between waist and hip, and often a slightly higher rise. Men's jeans run straighter through the hip and seat, with the waist and hip closer in measurement. Labeling differs too: men's denim usually names the waist in inches, while women's denim often uses a numbered size that does not match the inch measurement at all.
A Rough Translation
In knitwear, a men's size generally fits about one size larger than the same letter in women's, so a women's medium is close to a men's small. Treat that as a starting point rather than a rule. The surest check is a sweater you already love: lay it flat, measure across the chest, and compare that number before you order.
Decide What the Extra Room Is For
Crossing sections changes more than one measurement at once, so pick the one you care about most. If you want length, a long hem and sleeves to push up, the men's knit gives it to you. If you want width without the extra length, sizing up within your own section often works better. In denim, the waist-to-hip shape matters most, so choose the section whose shape matches yours and adjust the size from there.
Ask Before You Order
If you are unsure, email us the piece you have in mind and your usual size in your own section, and we will tell you the closest match in the other one. And if it still lands wrong, returns are free under our Return & Refund Policy.
Thank you for shopping with us, and for wearing something you can settle into.
